Speaking on the federation’s roadmap, Dunkwu disclosed that a series of structured competitions have been lined up to ensure consistent activity and long-term growth across the sport.
“Swimmers will not be idle in 2026,” Dunkwu said. “We have scheduled over six national youth tournaments that will run across different zones of the country.”
According to him, the initiative is aimed at building a strong pipeline of young swimmers who can be nurtured into elite athletes capable of competing on the continental and global stage.
He stressed that the federation’s vision goes beyond short-term success, placing emphasis on sustainability and nationwide inclusion.
“Our focus is on the future,” he added. “Grassroots development is the foundation of any successful sport, and we are committed to identifying talents early, supporting them properly, and giving them regular opportunities to compete.”
Dunkwu also noted that the federation plans to work closely with schools, coaches and state associations to expand participation and improve technical standards.
“Swimming must grow from the base,” he explained. “With consistent competitions and the right structures, we can raise the level of the sport and produce athletes Nigeria can be proud of.”
The Aquatics Federation president expressed confidence that sustained investment in youth programmes will help transform Nigerian swimming and restore its competitiveness in Africa and beyond.
