#SupereaglesAFCONupdate – NFF Clarifies Umar Sadiq AFCON Withdrawal Amidst Online Speculation

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has stated to address the situation surrounding Umar Sadiq withdrawing from the Super Eagles’ 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) camp.

The Real Sociedad striker withdrew just before the tournament commenced, citing an injury. However, a video circulating online showed him back in training with his club in Spain, raising questions about the legitimacy of his reported injury.

In the official statement, the NFF expressed surprise at the social media speculation and emphasized the professionalism employed in the decision to excuse Sadiq from the national team camp.

The NFF clarified that their medical team adhered to the best procedures, conducting thorough assessments before advising Head Coach José Peseiro on Sadiq’s withdrawal.

According to the statement, Sadiq arrived at the camp in good condition, undergoing standard pre-competition medical assessments.

He trained with the team and even played in a friendly match against Guinea on January 8. During the game, he sustained an injury to the back of his left knee, prompting the medical team’s cautionary advice for substitution.

Despite Sadiq expressing his readiness to continue playing, the swelling in his knee worsened the next day, leading to a decision for him to withdraw.

The NFF clarified that reports circulating in the media did not accurately represent the events.

They asserted the competency of their medical team, which includes specialists in sports and exercise medicine.

The team followed due processes and consulted with a knee surgeon in Spain, whom Sadiq had contacted, before deciding the best interest of the player and the nation.

While the medical team refrained from engaging in public disputes, the NFF affirmed their commitment to upholding their collective responsibility to the AFCON championship.

The statement concluded by highlighting that Sadiq was informed throughout the process, initiated rehabilitation with the team physiotherapist and later returned to his club in Spain.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles resumed training on Monday as they prepare for their second group game against hosts Cote d’Ivoire on Thursday in the ongoing AFCON tournament.
