Nigeria’s female national team, Super Falcons’ captain, Rasheedat Ajibade is relishing their victorious start to this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2024) in Morocco and promised that they will keep building on the result.
Sports247 reports that the Falcons struggled for rhythm and cohesion on Sunday in Casablanca, but Ajibade and her colleagues still won their opening group match 3-0 against Tunisia.
While relishing the joy of victory, Ajibade acknowledged that it is only their first step towards achieving a historic 10th WAFCON title, which she admitted will not come to them on a platter of gold.
The former Atletico Femenino of Spain attacker reasoned, “We are looking forward to achieving Mission X, but the most important focus for us is to keep building on what we’ve already done.
“We are talented athletes, and we want to give our best in this tournament. With all due respect to all my sisters on this tournament, we want to win it, but it’s not going to be an easy thing to achieve.”
The Falcons will now turn their focus on their next group game, which will be versus Botswana on Thursday, ahead of which Ajibade promised that the Nigerian players will step up their efforts, in order to play better than they did against Tunisia.
She added, “It’s not going to be an easy one, because it’s a big tournament, and there are a lot of improved teams. There are also a lot of talented players from other countries.
“So, we are not thinking it’s gonna be an easy cruise. So, the most important thing for us as a team is to turn up and show how we can be at our best.”
‘The Lady With Blue Hair’ concluded by admitting that the Falcons were not at their best during Sunday’s match, but put it down to the fact that it was their first game at this year’s competition and she reckoned that they will improve with each passing fixture during the unfolding championship in The Atlas Nation.
“We should show what is good as a team, but we are still work in progress. We are not perfect yet, but we’ll put every positive thing together to make sure we have a formidable team for the tournament,” Ajibade concluded.
