A former youth international striker, Eddie Dombraye has raised a suggestion for regular checks on Super Eagles’ players at their clubs, and discussions should hold with them, before they turn up in the national team’s camp.
Sports247 gathered that the former Bendel Insurance FC of Benin City and Iwuayanwu Nationale of Owerri striker is also of a view that Eagles’ players need to be properly monitored at their various clubs in order to know what they are going through.

Dombraye, who was part of the Flying Eagles’ squad of 1999 that failed to shine when Nigeria hosted the then World Youth Championship (WYC), posited that personal discussions should be held with national team players at their clubs.
He opined further, “There is a need for one-on-one talks with these players. Most of them know what they should do, but they find it difficult to perform in the national team.
“That could be due to changes they have at their clubs, compared to what they see in the national team. They know the advantages of being there, but they also face pressure from their clubs.”
Dombraye, who made top marks at club level in France and Switzerland, but played a single match for the Super Eagles, further pointed out that pressure being faced by players at their various bases could make them lose focus when called upon for the national assignment.
“They face various issues at their clubs where they always fight for playing time. Some of them might not be playing week in, week out … and that affects their mood.
“You need to discuss with those who are not playing and know what is wrong. You even need to talk with home-based players to know what is going on at their clubs.
“The coach should speak one-on-one with each player to know who is playing and who is not playing … then find out why. Getting information about our players at their clubs is very important,” Dombraye submitted.
