Super Eagles’ New Jerseys Revive Memories Of Atlanta ’96, Ahead Of Clash With Iran

The Super Eagles have received a massive boost ahead of their friendly against Iran, as the team’s new jerseys have been described as a symbolic reminder of Nigeria’s gold medal at Atlanta ’96 Olympics.

Sports247 gathered that one of the promotional points by American kit maker, Nike, while unveiling the jersey on Monday, is that it is part of its 30th anniversary of Nigeria’s Atlanta ’96 heroics.

Nike’s promo for the jerseys that will be worn for the first time this Friday against Iran in Turkey indicated that the new kit designs ‘celebrate the 30th anniversary of one of the greatest achievements in Nigerian football history.’

At the same time, Nike used the moment to announce its plans to re-issue the iconic jersey that Nigeria’s Dream Team wore in their 3-2 victory over Argentina on August 3, 1996 to win the football gold at the Olympic Games.

The Super Eagles are urged to consider the new jerseys as a ‘symbol of belief, brilliance and Nigerian pride,’ which should spur them to seek victory versus Iran on Friday as well as against Jordan next week Tuesday at the same venue.

Aside the milestone celebration value of the new kit from Nike, the manufacturers also reminded the Eagles of the ‘never say die Niaja spirit,’ which many of the players got from kicking football on the streets as kids in various communities.

They have been urged to take that spirit into the upcoming matches, in order to bounce back from ugly memories of their failure to qualify for this year’s FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by USA, Canada and Mexico.

Nike’s promotional statement added, “The new designs feature bold, modern aesthetics that highlight the symbolic identity of ‘Naija.’ This kit continues their tradition of street-ready designs that make a statement far beyond the field.”
