Super Eagles Must Avoid Overreliance on Osimhen Ahead of FIFA World Cup Playoffs, Warns Akpeyi

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has warned that Nigeria’s growing dependence on Victor Osimhen could become a major weakness as the team prepares for the crucial FIFA World Cup qualification playoffs against Gabon.

Akpeyi, who represented Nigeria at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, said while Osimhen’s quality is unquestionable, the overreliance on the striker to deliver goals has exposed the team’s lack of attacking depth.

He stressed that other forwards must take responsibility and contribute more decisively in front of goal.

“Every team has its star player — for Nigeria, it’s Osimhen,” Akpeyi said.

“But that doesn’t mean others should relax or wait for him to perform magic. The Super Eagles need a collective mentality. Football at this stage, especially with FIFA World Cup qualification on the line, demands shared responsibility.”

Akpeyi highlighted that relying too heavily on one player can make the team predictable and easier for opponents to neutralize. He pointed to the recent qualifiers, where Nigeria struggled to score in Osimhen’s absence, as evidence that the team must diversify its attacking options.

“The moment opponents block Osimhen, the team looks lost,” he said. “We need players like Kelechi Iheanacho, Ademola Lookman, and Moses Simon to take charge and create their own moments. Goals can come from anywhere — that’s what makes a great team.”

The former Chippa United shot-stopper also urged the coaching staff to encourage more tactical flexibility and fluid movement in attack. “This is not about blaming anyone,” he added.

“It’s about ensuring the Super Eagles have multiple weapons ahead of the World Cup playoffs. If everyone steps up, Nigeria will be unstoppable.”
