“Super Eagles Have No Excuse: Former U-17 World Cup Winner Confident Of Nigeria’s Qualification For 2026 World Cup”

Festus Odini, a former FIFA U-17 World Cup winner, expressed his belief that the Super Eagles of Nigeria have no excuse not to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Reacting to Nigeria’s placement in Group C alongside South Africa, Benin Republic, Rwanda, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the former Golden Eaglets star emphasized the importance of not underestimating any team, especially South Africa and Benin, whom he sees as potential threats to the Super Eagles.

“While the group may appear easy for Nigeria, in football nowadays, there are no longer pushovers,” Odini told The Guardian. “Every country wants to go to the World Cup, as it is a very big stage that every footballer dreams of playing on. We must have all hands on deck if we truly want to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.”

When asked about his confidence in the Super Eagles’ ability to top the group comfortably, Odini emphasized that nothing is guaranteed in football and that Nigeria, like any other team, must earn their place in the World Cup.

“This time around, the Super Eagles must give their best during the qualification phase,” Odini said. “No excuse will justify their failure to qualify for the World Cup, especially after missing out on the 2022 edition in Qatar. Nigeria must do everything possible to secure a spot in the global showpiece.”

Odini emphasized the need for thorough preparations and highlighted that while Nigeria may be stronger on paper compared to most teams in their group, football is unpredictable. He believes that South Africa, in particular, will present challenges for the Super Eagles.

Republic of Benin, one of Nigeria’s Group C opponents, is coached by Gernot Rohr, who was previously the manager of the Super Eagles.

Odini stated that Rohr will see the group as an opportunity to make a statement by defeating Nigeria, and the Super Eagles must prove their decision to part ways with him was justified by defeating Benin both home and away.

In conclusion, Odini emphasized the importance of strong preparations, acknowledging the competitiveness of the qualifying campaign and the determination of every country to secure a place in the World Cup.
