Former Nigerian goalkeeper Dele Aiyenugba has welcomed the possibility of Arthur Okonkwo receiving a Super Eagles invitation ahead of the upcoming Unity Cup tournament.
Speaking on Nigeria’s current goalkeeping situation, Aiyenugba explained that introducing a new face could help improve competition within the squad.
“It’s a good time to test him,” Aiyenugba said.
According to the former Super Eagles shot-stopper, the uncertainty surrounding current first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who remains without a club, makes the situation even more important.
“The goalkeeping department needs balance again,” he implied.
Aiyenugba believes Okonkwo’s arrival could push competition higher and strengthen the position overall.
“Competition helps everybody improve,” he noted.
The former goalkeeper also praised Okonkwo’s development and readiness for international football after switching allegiance to Nigeria recently.
“He deserves a proper look,” he added.
Nigeria continues searching for long-term stability between the posts as younger goalkeepers attempt to establish themselves in the national team setup.
“This is the right moment to evaluate options,” many football observers believe.
For Aiyenugba, the message is clear.
The Super Eagles need healthy competition.
New goalkeepers deserve opportunities.
And proper squad depth remains important for long-term success.
Because strong national teams are built when every position has serious competition and quality options.
