When the Eagles tango both countries in Amman, memories will come alive about a 1-0 loss Nigeria suffered against Jordan in 2013 and a 0-0 draw with Iran in 2014 – as the three-time African champions are yet to score against the duo.
The first of the aforementioned matches was an international friendly away to Jordan on October 28, 2013, when a second-string Eagles’ squad fell by a lone goal against their hosts.
The Nigerian squad, which was coached by Stephen Keshi and captained by Chidozie Agbim, had home-based players in preparation for CHAN 2014, with Ejike Uzoenyi, Azubuike Egwuekwe, Solomon Kwambe, Sunday Mba, Rabiu Ali and Oghenekaro Etebo top of the roster.
The next was a Group F clash at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where a highly energetic Eagles’ squad battled to a barren draw with Iran at Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, Brazil.
The Eagles’ squad was also coached by Keshi and featured the full array of Nigeria’s key players of that period, but they could not get a goal past the Iranians on that prominent date in history – June 16, 2014.
Nigeria’s line-up for the game had Vincent Enyeama – Efe Ambrose, Kenneth Omeruo, Godfrey Oboabona (Joseph Yobo 29th), Juwon Oshaniwa – Eddy Ogenyi Onazi, John Mikel Obi, Ramon Azeez (Osaze Odemwingie 69th) – Victor Moses, Emmanuel Emenike (Shola Ameobi 52nd), Ahmed Musa.
Fast foward to March 2026 … the current array of Eagles’ players will have the chance to rewrite history in the coming month, as Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Friday confirmed games versus Iran and Jordan.
An NFF media statement disclosed, “The mini-tournament will kick off with a clash between the Super Eagles and the senior men national team of Iran, at the 17,000-capacity Amman International Stadium, on Friday, 27th March 2026.
“On Tuesday, 31st March, hosts Jordan will take on 2025 AFCON bronze-medallists Nigeria at Amman International Stadium, while Costa Rica will confront Iran at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium.”
