Super Eagles Crowned Kings Again: Nigeria Edge Jamaica In Penalty Drama To Retain Unity Cup

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have retained their perfect record in the Unity Cup, overcoming a spirited Jamaican side 5-4 on penalties after a dramatic 2-2 draw in regulation time at Gtech Community Stadium, Brentford.

The game began with fireworks. In just the 9th minute, Moses Simon struck for Nigeria, finishing sharply to put the Super Eagles in front.

But Jamaica responded quickly—Kaheim Dixon found the equalizer in the 12th minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to level the score at 1-1.

The second half resumed with the same intensity. Samuel Chukwueze, under scrutiny for inconsistency, stepped up with a brilliant goal in the 53rd minute, curling a low strike past the Jamaican keeper to restore Nigeria’s lead at 2-1.

But once again, Jamaica hit back. Renaldo Cephas tore down the left flank in the 63rd minute, beating Sodiq Ismail before delivering a pinpoint cross to Jonathan Russell, who made no mistake from close range to bring the game to 2-2.

With no winner after 90 minutes, the final headed to a penalty shootout. Nigeria held their nerve, converting all five penalties, while Jamaica missed one—handing the Super Eagles a 5-4 victory and the trophy.

“It’s more than just a win,” said former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje. “It’s proof of depth, character, and unity in the squad.”

Peter Ijeh praised Chukwueze’s impact: “He delivered when it mattered. That’s how you answer critics.”

Abiodun Obafemi, though pleased with the result, urged caution: “We lost control in key moments. That needs to improve before we face tougher opposition.”

With this result, Nigeria remains the only team to have ever lifted the Unity Cup, previously winning in 2002 and 2004—and now again in 2025. A perfect record, a thrilling final, and another chapter of Nigerian football glory written in London.
