Head coach Jose Peseiro expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance in a post-match press conference, highlighting the resilience that led to two crucial goals and a clean sheet against a formidable opponent.

Peseiro’s joy was tempered by the injury to goalkeeper Nwabali, who was forced out of the Round of 16 clash after colliding with a Cameroon player.

Peseiro remains hopeful about Nwabali’s recovery, stating, “We will assess the state of Nwabali’s injury in the next 24 to 48 hours. It’s difficult to assess his condition while we were in the match, but I am hoping that he will be fit for the next match. I want him to play, and the players want him to play.”

Looking ahead to the quarterfinal clash against Angola, Peseiro acknowledged the opponent’s excellence in the tournament and urged caution, emphasizing the competitive nature of the remaining teams.

Despite the challenges, Peseiro maintained a light-hearted approach, stating, “For now, we will continue to sleep early and eat pasta,” while also highlighting the seriousness required in facing any team at this stage.

Addressing concerns about captain Ahmed Musa’s lack of playing time, Peseiro affirmed Musa’s crucial role as both a player and a leader.

Despite not featuring in the matches, Musa’s presence is deemed essential for his leadership and mentoring qualities. Peseiro explained, “If he weren’t an option, I wouldn’t call him. But because he is, his contribution goes beyond the pitch.”

Peseiro underscored the importance of Musa’s experience in guiding the younger players, emphasizing the unique challenges of the AFCON tournament. “We have 11 players experiencing their first AFCON,” he noted.

“Someone needs to manage them, like me. Sometimes, I ask Musa, Omeruo, and Ekong to share their knowledge and explain the tournament atmosphere.”

As the Super Eagles prepare for the quarterfinal showdown against Angola, Peseiro’s optimism and strategic approach provide a glimpse into the team’s determination to go deep into the competition.
