A mixed martial arts (MMA) competition named in honour of former sports minister, Chief Sunday Dare, is scheduled to start on Wednesday in Bayelsa State capital, Yenagoa, and roll until the 18th of this month.

Sports247 gathered that the forthcoming competition, which is a brain child of Nigeria Mixed Martial Arts Federation (NMMAF) and second edition of Sunday Dare Open National MMA Championship, will be organised in conjunction with Bayelsa State Sports Council.

A press release heralding details of the competition stated, “The five-day championship is expected to bring together Mixed Martial Artists, coaches, technical officials and other stakeholders from across Nigeria.

“The event will provide a platform for athletes to compete, develop their skills, discover new talent and contribute to the continued growth of Mixed Martial Arts in Nigeria.

“The competition will feature athletes across various weight categories, with participants expected from different parts of the country. Beyond medals, the championship will also provide an avenue for talent identification and development.

“While creating greater awareness and visibility for Mixed Martial Arts in Nigeria, the 2026 edition will feature enhanced organisation, quality officiating and competitive bouts to develop athletes, strengthen competitions and promote Mixed Martial Arts across Nigeria.”

Sports247 gathered that the 2nd Sunday Dare Open National MMA Championship will serve as another important platform for athletes, coaches, officials and stakeholders to come together in advancing development of the sport in Nigeria.
