On May 9, 2025, a chess competition was held in Benin City, Edo State, to honour the memory of the late Barrister Kehinde Cletus Idemudia. Organized by the Idemudia Ogunbor family, the event took place at Swift Education Centre and brought together 39 students from five secondary schools.

The students competed in five rounds of chess, each with a 20-minute time control. Tie-break matches were played to determine the top positions in both the boys’ and girls’ categories. Winners received cash prizes of ₦40,000, ₦30,000, ₦20,000, and ₦10,000, while fourth-place prizes were shared among ties.
Divine Akinrogunde won the boys’ category by defeating Richy Osaware, while Esther Sonyaolu beat Victoria Oyakhilome to take the top spot among the girls. All participants and officials received certificates, and medals and trophies were awarded to top performers and their schools.
Barrister K.C. Idemudia, who passed away in May 2013, was a retired Permanent Secretary in Edo State’s civil service and a committed Catholic. He was honored by the late Oba Erediauwa for his key role in organizing the 1979 coronation ceremony of the Benin Monarch.
