Abia State athletes has delivered a string of fine performances at the ongoing South East Zonal Elimination for the National Youth Games in Enugu, booking tickets in key ball games and setting up decisive finals for Monday.
In rugby, Abia’s male team proved dominant, beating Enugu 19–7 before edging Imo 3–2 in a tense contest to finish first and secure the region’s sole qualification spot for the national finals in Delta.

Handball also delivered joy for Abia. The male side overpowered Enugu 32–17 and saw off Imo 22–17 to emerge zonal champions and qualify for the Games.
In football, Abia’s boys opened with a commanding 3–0 victory over Anambra, while in volleyball, the men’s team defeated Anambra 2–0 before falling 2–0 to hosts Enugu. The women’s side, however, showed resilience with a straight-sets win over Anambra.
Cricket was less fruitful, as Abia’s female team lost to Ebonyi State.
