“Stay Focused, Stay Clean, Stay Active” – Ayomide Onasanya (Tobi Amusan Jnr) Inspires Young Nigerian Athletes With Powerful Message

Nigerian athlete and Olabisi Onabanjo University graduate, Onasanya Ayomide Adedayo, popularly known as Tobi Amusan Jnr, has shared an inspiring message to young and aspiring athletes, urging them to remain focused, disciplined, and passionate about their sporting journey despite the challenges.

In an exclusive chat with Sports247, the Philosophy graduate revealed that her deep passion for sports was the driving force behind her decision to take up sprinting and hurdles, describing athletics as her “way to stay fit, active, and fulfilled.”

“My main reason for becoming an athlete was my passion for sporting activities. I love to stay fit and active — and sports made it easier for me to live that lifestyle,” Ayomide said.

She, however, acknowledged the growing difficulties that Nigerian athletes face today, especially when it comes to financial and emotional support.

“Athletes face a lot of challenges these days — from financing their health and training to transportation and allowances. Some also go through emotional struggles when coaches speak harshly to them or when support is lacking,” she noted.

Despite these hurdles, Ayomide emphasized that her inner drive and positive mindset keep her going.

“My passion drives me deeply. There’s that zeal that keeps me active — always reminding me that your time will come, you will shine. I stay motivated when I see others succeed, and instead of feeling envious, I celebrate them. That gives me the joy to thrive more,” she added.

Balancing athletics with personal life and other commitments, Ayomide explained, requires discipline and planning.

“Setting one’s priorities really matters. Scheduling your activities is the only way to manage your athletic responsibilities and other things. It’s not been easy merging two or three things together, but better planning brings better results.”

The talented sprinter and hurdler also expressed her desire to give back to upcoming athletes, especially those who struggle financially to keep their sporting dreams alive.

“I’m really thriving to give back to the young ones — the aspiring and fresh athletes who may not have the means to fund themselves. Continued training and growth will help me get better so I can inspire and support others.”

Reflecting on Tobi Amusan’s record-breaking achievements at the World Championships in Tokyo, Ayomide said the success represents what dedication, belief, and hard work can achieve.

She ended her interview with a heartfelt message to all young athletes across Nigeria:

“Stay focused. Stay clean. Stay active. Be determined. Don’t get distracted. And most importantly, put God first — in the beginning, middle, and end of everything you do.”

Ayomide Onasanya (Tobi Amusan Jnr) continues to embody the true spirit of perseverance — a symbol of hope, inspiration, and strength for Nigeria’s next generation of athletes.
