Stakeholders in Nigerian sports have heaped praise on the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, for his decisive role in uniting all parties in flag football under one umbrella.
With the sport rapidly growing in Nigeria and across Africa, and with Olympic recognition on the horizon, the DG’s intervention has been described as “the turning point” that will finally deliver the long-awaited Flag Football Federation of Nigeria.

Olopade also made it clear that the government does not recognize any individual or association currently parading itself as the official body for flag football, stressing that only the new federation being set up by the NSC will be recognized. According to him, the various existing groups have been assigned specific roles on the new board, ensuring inclusivity and unity in the sport’s governance.
The DG further confirmed that the inauguration of the board of the new Flag Football Federation of Nigeria will be conducted by the National Sports Commission in the coming days.
This development follows Nigeria’s double triumph at the IFAF African Championships in Cairo, where the men’s and women’s national teams were crowned continental champions. The victory highlighted both Nigeria’s talent and the urgent need for an organized governing structure to support future growth.
By securing unity, the NSC has placed Nigeria on a stronger path to international recognition, grassroots expansion, and eventual Olympic participation.
Stakeholders noted: “The DG’s leadership has ensured we stand together as one. With unity, structure, and vision, the future of flag football in Nigeria is brighter than ever.”
