The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Hon. Adeyinka Adeboye, has paid glowing tribute to Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong, following the defender’s announcement of his retirement from international football after a remarkable 10 years of dedicated service to Nigeria.
Describing Troost-Ekong as “one of the finest leaders the Super Eagles have ever produced,” Adeboye said the former captain’s decade-long commitment embodied patriotism, discipline, and an unwavering passion for the green-and-white jersey.

“William Troost-Ekong served Nigeria with honour, heart, and uncommon dedication. His leadership on and off the pitch inspired millions, and his legacy will forever be written in gold in the history of Nigerian football,” the SSA stated.
Ekong, who made 83 senior appearances for Nigeria, featured in AFCON 2019, 2021, and 2023, earning silver and bronze medals and playing a pivotal role in Nigeria’s run to the 2023 final in Côte d’Ivoire. His iconic three goals in the tournament earned him the Most Valuable Player (Player of the Tournament) Award—the highest individual honour of AFCON.
Adeboye noted that Ekong’s contributions transcended the pitch, describing him as a role model whose humility, discipline, and professionalism set the standard for future generations.
“He carried the hopes of a nation with grace and responsibility. Long before becoming captain, he was already a leader—calm, focused, and deeply committed to the success of the team,” he added.
The SSA also emphasized the importance of celebrating players who give their all for the country, urging young Nigerian footballers to study Ekong’s career as a blueprint for excellence.
“From his AFCON heroics to his World Cup presence, Troost-Ekong showed what it means to wear the Nigerian crest with pride. His journey should motivate every young player coming through our grassroots system,” he said.
Adeboye concluded by wishing Ekong success in the next chapter of his career, reaffirming that Nigeria owes him a debt of gratitude.
“We thank you, Captain. Nigeria appreciates you, and we stand with you as you move into your next phase. Legends don’t retire—they live forever through the memories they leave behind,” he said.
Troost-Ekong leaves the international stage celebrated as a warrior, leader, and one of the most adored Super Eagles captains of the modern era.
