The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Hon. Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye, has expressed confidence in Team Nigeria’s ability to deliver an outstanding performance at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, describing the nation’s athletes as worthy ambassadors prepared to uphold Nigeria’s rich sporting heritage.
Hon. Adeboye said Team Nigeria’s participation at the Games represents another opportunity to showcase the country’s immense sporting talent and reaffirm its status as one of Africa’s leading sporting nations.
According to the Presidential aide, the country’s impressive record at previous editions of the Commonwealth Games is evidence of the resilience, determination, and exceptional abilities of Nigerian athletes.
“Our athletes have consistently demonstrated that Nigerians possess the talent, courage, and resilience to compete with the very best in the world. I have every confidence that Team Nigeria will once again make the nation proud through discipline, determination, and excellence.”
The SSA noted that the achievements of Nigerian athletes on the international stage continue to inspire millions of young people across the country, reinforcing the importance of sustained investment in grassroots sports development.
He explained that every successful athlete represents years of hard work, sacrifice, and structured development, stressing that Nigeria’s future sporting successes will depend on how well talents are identified and nurtured at the grassroots.
“Every champion begins somewhere—in a school, a local community, or a neighbourhood playground. That is why grassroots sports development remains the cornerstone of our vision. Our mission is to ensure that every talented Nigerian child has the opportunity to develop, compete, and ultimately represent the nation on the global stage.”
Hon. Adeboye commended the leadership of the National Sports Commission, under the Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, for their commitment to repositioning Nigerian sports and providing an enabling environment for athletes to succeed.
He added that the reforms being implemented across the sports sector complement the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which recognises sports as a strategic tool for youth empowerment, national unity, economic development, and international recognition.
The SSA reiterated that his office remains committed to expanding grassroots sports infrastructure, strengthening school sports, supporting community competitions, and building strategic partnerships that will create sustainable pathways for young athletes.
“Our objective extends beyond winning medals. We are building a system that will consistently produce world-class athletes while creating opportunities for millions of young Nigerians through sports. That is the lasting legacy we seek to establish under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
Hon. Adeboye called on Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to rally behind Team Nigeria, expressing confidence that the athletes would compete with honour, integrity, and patriotism.
He wished the contingent a successful outing and urged them to continue flying the nation’s flag with pride, reminding them that they carry the aspirations of millions of Nigerians and serve as role models for the next generation of sporting talents.
