Senator Owan-Enoh also announced the government’s intention to expand the existing “adopt-a-talent” program initiated by previous administrations. This expanded program will not only cater to the needs of athletes but will also focus on maintaining sports facilities and specific sporting events.

Speaking in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, just before the opening ceremony of the National Youth Games, the Sports Minister acknowledged the significance of this sporting event and the role it plays in fostering talent discovery.

He stated, “We know that welfare is an issue affecting all the federations negatively; so, we will look at ways to solve that problem. One of the most important policies of the government is to grow local talents such that they can compete favorably with their overseas-born counterparts.”

While reiterating the government’s commitment to nurturing local talents, Senator Owan-Enoh added that the aim is to provide an environment where youths born and living in Nigeria can realize their full potential.

The “adopt-an-athlete” program, which has proven to be effective, will be extended to cover sports facilities and specific sports disciplines.

Regarding the ongoing National Youth Games, Senator Owan-Enoh emphasized its importance in talent discovery and national unity. Gathering over 4,754 young athletes from across Nigeria in one center is seen as a crucial opportunity to identify talents in various sports.

Furthermore, Senator Owan-Enoh highlighted the role the National Youth Games play in promoting national unity. The event brings together children from diverse states and backgrounds, allowing them to interact and build friendships. Ensuring the success of this event is considered essential in fostering national unity among Nigeria’s youth.

The Nigerian government’s commitment to sports development, particularly nurturing local talents, demonstrates its dedication to improving the country’s presence on the international sports stage while creating a sense of unity among young athletes from different regions of Nigeria.
