Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has assured Nigerians that the team will approach Tuesday’s crucial FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifier against South Africa with confidence but without arrogance.
The experienced defender emphasized that Nigeria’s focus remains firmly on securing maximum points in Bloemfontein as the race for qualification heats up. He stressed that while the Super Eagles respect the strength of their opponents, they will not allow complacency or overconfidence to affect their performance.

“Our approach will be devoid of arrogance; we will play with level heads and go all out for victory,” Ekong said. “There will be no arrogance, but we will not be diffident either. We know what is at stake and we are ready.”
The Nigeria captain, who was named Man of the Competition at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, explained that the team is not dwelling on past encounters. Nigeria edged South Africa on penalties in the semi-final of that tournament, but Ekong insists this fixture is a new challenge entirely.
“We defeated them at the Africa Cup, but that is in the past,” he noted. “Both teams have made changes since then, and this is a different battle. South Africa is a good team we respect, but we just have to play our game.”
The central defender reaffirmed that Nigeria’s ultimate ambition remains qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. “Our objective has not changed; we want to go to the World Cup finals next year,” he concluded.
The highly-anticipated clash at the Free State Stadium promises to be a fierce contest, as both nations seek to gain an advantage in Group C.
