Solomon Adeshina: Nigeria Deserved AFCON Glory Despite CAF Controversies

Veteran football coach Solomon Adeshina has hailed Nigeria’s national team for an impressive outing at the Africa Cup of Nations, insisting that the Super Eagles deserved to emerge champions despite what he described as controversial circumstances surrounding the final.

Speaking in a post-tournament assessment, Adeshina praised Nigeria’s technical and tactical balance throughout the competition, noting that the team showed quality, discipline, and cohesion across all departments. According to him, the Super Eagles consistently demonstrated why they were among the strongest sides at the tournament, often outplaying opponents with superior structure and game intelligence.

“They deserved to be champions,” Adeshina stated. “Looking at their previous matches, Nigeria were practically and technically sound. They surprised many of us with how solid they were in every position.”

However, the experienced coach expressed concern over what he termed “Morocco’s antics” and alleged institutional backing, which he believes had a significant influence on the outcome of the final. Adeshina argued that such issues cast a shadow over the competition and could damage the credibility of African football if not addressed decisively.

“This is a dent on the nation and on African football as a whole,” he said. “CAF needs to react and ensure that anything capable of bringing the game into disrepute is pushed away. Fairness and transparency must always come first.”

Despite his criticisms, Adeshina maintained an optimistic outlook for Nigeria’s future, stressing that the tournament performance should be a foundation rather than a final destination. While applauding the team’s overall display, he challenged the players to develop a more aggressive edge in decisive moments.

“Nigeria were impressive in all positions,” he concluded. “But to dominate Africa consistently, they must add more aggression and ruthlessness, especially in key matches.”

The Super Eagles’ AFCON campaign, though falling short of ultimate glory, has renewed belief in the team’s direction and reinforced expectations of greater success ahead.
