Sodje Warns Super Eagles: ‘Stay Humble, The Job Isn’t Done Yet’

Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has urged Nigeria’s senior national team to remain grounded and avoid overconfidence ahead of their crucial World Cup playoff fixtures, warning that the path to qualification is still long and demanding.

Reacting after the team’s impressive 4-0 victory that secured passage to the playoff round, Sodje cautioned that while the win has lifted morale nationwide, the players must remember the inconsistencies that put them in a difficult position earlier in the campaign.

“The 4-0 win was brilliant, but it’s no reason to relax,” Sodje said. “We all saw what inconsistency did to the team before — they can’t afford to repeat that. This is not the time for complacency; it’s time to double down and finish the job.”

He emphasized that maintaining focus and professionalism would be key if Nigeria hopes to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, adding that past mistakes should serve as motivation rather than pride.

“The players have shown what they can do when they stay disciplined and united,” the ex-Fulham and Reading defender continued. “But football is about momentum. They must approach every game with hunger and respect for their opponents. The job is not done yet.”

Sodje also praised the impact of coach Eric Chelle, describing the team’s improved chemistry as a positive sign, but warned that consistency would determine whether Nigeria reaches the World Cup or not.

“The coach has done well to bring balance and confidence, but this is where real work begins,” he added. “Every match from now on must be treated like a final. Nigeria must qualify — there are no excuses.”
