Various social media platforms were buzzing early Saturday after news emerged that Confederation of African Football (CAF) had cleared Besiktas of Turkey midfielder, Wilfred Onyinyen Ndidi to feature for Nigeria against DR Congo on Sunday, Sports247 reports.
Ndidi had initially been considered ‘suspended’ for the 2026 World Cup plays-offs final in Rabat, Morocco due to the yellow card he got in Thursday’s 4-1 semi-final win over Gabon, which was his second booking in the qualification series.

However, a twist came to the story on Saturday when a post on the Super Eagles’ X page unexpectedly revealed that Ndidi was actually eligible for Sunday’s game because yellow cards from the original qualifiers do not carry over into the play-offs.
The post via Super Eagles (@NGSuperEagles) TEAM NEWS UPDATE disclosed: “CAF has confirmed that Wilfred Ndidi is eligible to feature for the Super Eagles in Sunday’s playoff clash against DR Congo.
“Cautions accumulated during the World Cup qualifiers do not carry over into the playoffs; only confirmed suspensions apply.”
Sports247 noted that Nigerian fans quickly rushed varying comments in reaction to the report, but an official of the NFF said they will have to check how authentic it is before coming out with an official reaction.
