Lagos Alpha underlined their dominance in Showtime Season XIII by defeating newcomers Longhorns 22-18 in the season’s curtain-raiser at the Showtime Sports Arena on Sunday, with player Wale Quadri Odufuwa declaring that the victory proved the team is “still in charge” despite off-season departures.

Odufuwa, speaking after the match, said the win was vital for Alpha, especially as several of their former teammates now play for Longhorns.

“The game was good. It was the first match of the season, and we both seemed a little new, but we really needed this win,” Odufuwa told Sports247.

“Most of the guys we played with last season are now in Longhorns, the team we just beat today. Only a few of us remain in Alpha, but we had to show them that we’re still in charge.”

Although he came in late and did not record a touchdown, Wale expressed satisfaction with the team’s overall performance and highlighted the resilience that carried them through the opening contest.

I came in a bit late and didn’t get a touchdown, but I’m happy with how we performed overall,” a delighted Wale explained.

He praised the decisive game-winning catch that sealed the result, emphasizing Alpha’s ability to hold firm under pressure.

Now in his second season with Lagos Alpha, Wale revealed that he initially joined flag football through a colleague after starting out in basketball.

“Honestly, I fell in love with the sports after playing my first game last season, I developed interest and decided to stay on,” he said.

Looking ahead, Odufuwa admitted the campaign will be tough, but he remains confident that Alpha have the quality and determination to defend their status as one of the league’s leading teams
