Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has challenged Nigeria’s new faces to seize their chance against Russia, calling Tuesday’s international friendly an important audition for players seeking permanent places in his team.
Nigeria face Russia at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium with a significantly reshaped squad after injuries, club restrictions and other availability issues ruled out several established internationals. Chelle originally selected 24 players, but the changes have left him with a younger and more experimental group.
Rather than lament the absences, Chelle believes the situation provides an opportunity to increase competition within the Super Eagles.
“This game is an opportunity for the new players to show what they can do,” Chelle said, explaining that some senior players could not make the trip because of club commitments and other circumstances.
The coach had deliberately named a different squad for the Russia friendly from the group selected for Nigeria’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with several players receiving their first senior invitations.
Among those hoping to strengthen their claims are Ikorodu City duo Michael Atata and Aderemi Adeoye, Finland-based goalkeeper Samuel James and several young overseas-based players.
Chelle is also demanding a reaction following Nigeria’s 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in Bissau. The coach admitted after that game that his team had been second best in aggression and intensity, weaknesses he wants corrected against Russia.
Nigeria had begun the AFCON qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar before the heavy defeat left them with three points from their opening two matches.
Despite Tuesday’s fixture being a friendly, Chelle insists Nigeria will approach it with the intention of winning while also assessing players who could provide greater depth for future competitive assignments.
The Super Eagles previously faced Russia in Moscow in June 2025, battling to a 1-1 draw after Tolu Arokodare cancelled out Semi Ajayi’s own goal.
For Chelle, the latest meeting carries a different significance. Russia is not simply another friendly — it is a chance for Nigeria to respond to Bissau and for a new generation to prove it deserves to remain when the established stars return.
