Semi Ajayi Leads Nigerian Charge as Newly Promoted Hull City Shock Manchester United on Premier League Return

Nigerian international Semi Ajayi made a dream start to Hull City’s return to the Premier League, scoring as the newly promoted Tigers stunned Manchester United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium on Saturday.

Ajayi opened the scoring in the 17th minute, reacting quickest to a rebound to put Hull City 1-0 ahead and send the home supporters into celebration. The goal was particularly significant as it became Hull’s first Premier League goal since their return to the top flight.

The Nigerian defender’s strike gave Hull confidence, and the hosts continued to put Manchester United under pressure.

Their advantage was doubled in the 38th minute when Nobel Mendy headed home from a set-piece, giving Hull a commanding 2-0 lead before the break.

Manchester United struggled to find a response after the interval, with Hull’s disciplined defence successfully protecting their two-goal advantage until the final whistle.

For Ajayi, it was a special way to begin the new Premier League campaign. The Nigerian centre-back not only helped Hull secure a famous victory but also etched his name into the club’s history by scoring in their first top-flight match after a nine-year absence.

Speaking after the memorable victory, Ajayi said:

“We knew we had to be brave because Manchester United are a top side. Scoring the first goal gave us belief, but the most important thing was how we stayed together afterwards. This is a fantastic start for the club, and we want to build on it.”

The result marked Hull City’s first league victory over Manchester United since 1974, making the occasion even more remarkable for the newly promoted side.

For Nigerian football fans, Ajayi’s performance provided another reason to celebrate as the Super Eagles defender opened his Premier League campaign with a goal against one of England’s biggest clubs.

Hull City 2-0 Manchester United. Semi Ajayi 17′. Nobel Mendy 38′. A dream Premier League return for the Tigers—and a memorable Nigerian moment.
