The father of French-born midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu has revealed that security concerns in Nigeria could affect his son’s prospects of representing the Super Eagles in the future.

Speaking to The Nation, Ugochukwu’s father acknowledged the strong emotional and cultural ties the family maintains with Nigeria but admitted that safety considerations remain a key factor in any international decision.
“It is their decision,” he said. “They know Nigeria is where they come from, but for security reasons, they prefer to remain where they are.”
Despite having lived in Europe for over 25 years, he emphasized that he has remained deeply connected to his roots and ensured his children were raised with a strong sense of Nigerian identity.
“I have lived in Europe for more than 25 years, and I have never forgotten my language,” he explained.
“That is what I instilled in my kids. Igbo was spoken at home and even on the pitch.”
He added that teaching his children the Igbo language strengthened family bonds and cultural awareness.
“I taught my children the Igbo language, and it helped our communication, especially in the presence of others. They speak Igbo as if they were born in Imo State.”
Ugochukwu, who is eligible to represent both France and Nigeria, remains one of several dual-nationality players whose international future continues to generate discussion among fans and stakeholders.
