Savio Idezi delivered a standout performance to claim the Man of the Match award as Smart City defeated Gateway FC in a pulsating five-goal encounter in Lagos, compounding what has been a difficult season for the Lisabi Boys.
The hosts drew first blood in the 36th minute when Gafar Ojo found the breakthrough, putting Smart City ahead in an evenly contested first half. Gateway FC, however, responded with determination after the restart.
In the 65th minute, Babatunde Taofeek produced a stunning solo effort to bring Gateway level at 1-1, injecting fresh momentum into the contest and setting the stage for a dramatic finale.
Smart City responded emphatically. Mubarak Mustapha restored the lead in the 67th minute before Savio Idezi extended the advantage just two minutes later, firing home in the 69th minute to open up a two-goal cushion at 3-1.
Gateway refused to go down without a fight. In the 75th minute, Christian Samuel reacted quickest to a loose ball to reduce the deficit, making it 3-2 and ensuring a tense finish in what had become a see-saw battle.
Despite late pressure from the visitors, Smart City held firm to secure all three points, while Gateway FC’s struggles continue in what has been a woeful campaign for the Abeokuta-based side.
Idezi’s influential display, capped by his crucial goal, proved decisive in a thrilling contest that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
