Samuel Chukwueze’s first goal of the season leads Villarreal to home win

Chukwueze was on from the start for Villarreal last night and he opened the scoring in an eventual 2:0 win against Real Valladolid. The goal is his first in ten games this season with the winger breaking a run of over 30 games without a goal to his name, stretching back to last season.

Chukwueze put his side in front in the 21st minute after a lovely play from Alfonso Pedraza down the left. The left-back won possession on the left channel and drove with the ball down the wing before placing a low cross into the box and Chukwueze was on hand to hit a first-time strike into the back of the net.

Pau Torres added Villarreal’s second in the 37th minute after being teed up by Paco Alcecer and the first half ended 2:0. Villarreal could not extend their lead in the second period but the points saved long before the final whistle.

Chukwueze was withdrawn in the 64 minutes for on-loan Real Madrid youngster Takefusa Kubo.

Chukwueze had not scored for his club since late January when he found the back of the net against Girona in a Copa Del Rey game. The winger would be relieved to have finally broken his goal drought that lasted for months.

The win leaves Villarreal third in the La Liga table after eight matches and they now turn attention to the Europa League where they travel to Maccabi Tel Aviv on Thursday for their third group game.
