Sam Sodje Urges Urgent AFCON Reset As Super Eagles Face ‘Unwanted Reality’ After World Cup Exit

Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has called on the Nigeria Football Federation to begin immediate and decisive preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, warning that the team now finds itself in an “unwanted and painful reality” after failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking in the aftermath of Nigeria’s penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo, Sodje described the national mood as one of deep frustration, noting that missing two consecutive World Cups is a setback of historic proportions. He said the disappointment must now fuel a complete re-focus on AFCON, which kicks off in Morocco next month.

According to the former Reading and Portsmouth defender, the players must be supported emotionally and psychologically, as they themselves understand the magnitude of the failure. Sodje insisted that this is not a moment for blame games or finger-pointing, but rather a moment for strategic planning and calm leadership from the football authorities.

Sodje stressed that Nigerians are hurting and rightly so, because the World Cup remains the pinnacle of football. However, he believes the quickest path to restoring national pride is a strong showing at the upcoming AFCON. He urged the federation to ensure proper logistics, early preparations, and a stable environment around the squad — areas that have historically undermined Nigeria in major tournaments.

The former defender also highlighted the importance of rekindling fan trust. According to him, winning the AFCON will not erase the pain of missing the World Cup, but it could give Nigerians something to celebrate again and remind the continent of the Super Eagles’ pedigree.

Sodje concluded by saying that the AFCON campaign must now be treated like a mission of national recovery, and warned that any form of complacency or administrative lapses could further dampen the country’s football reputation.
