Sam Sodje: “This Is the Real Nigeria — We Rise When It Matters Most”

Former Super Eagles defender, Sam Sodje, has hailed Nigeria’s emphatic 4–0 victory over Benin Republic, describing it as a statement performance that reflects the true spirit and quality of Nigerian football.

Speaking in Uyo after the game, Sodje said the result did not surprise him, as he had always believed in the players’ ability to respond when under pressure.

“This is the real Nigeria. When everyone doubts us, that’s when we come alive. That’s the fighting spirit that has always defined the Super Eagles,” Sodje said.

The former Reading FC and Portsmouth star commended the team’s organization, intensity, and the tactical awareness displayed by head coach Eric Chelle, adding that the players finally showed the character fans had been yearning for throughout the qualifiers.

He particularly praised Victor Osimhen for his leadership and hunger, describing his hat-trick performance as world-class.

“Osimhen is something special — his determination, his runs, his desire to win every duel. That’s what separates great players from the rest. Nigeria is lucky to have him,” Sodje said.

Sodje also applauded the unity and composure of the squad, emphasizing that the victory should serve as a reminder of what the Super Eagles can achieve when fully focused.

“It was a typical Nigerian response. We were criticized, we were under pressure, but this performance shows what happens when the team plays for the badge. This is how champions react,” he concluded.
