It was more than a visit – it was a moment of unity, pride, and shared African greatness.

Invited by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Kanu’s presence added star power and significance to the nation’s annual celebration of freedom.

The two leaders met at Villa Somalia, where they discussed the role of sports in diplomacy, youth empowerment, and peacebuilding across Africa.

“Your legacy is not just on the pitch, but in hearts across this continent,” President Mohamud said during the meeting.

Kanu, whose career spanned legendary clubs such as Ajax, Inter Milan, and Arsenal, is not only a football hero but also a humanitarian, known for founding the king Kanu Heart Foundation, which provides heart surgeries for underprivileged children in Africa.

During his visit, Kanu also engaged with local youth and football enthusiasts, inspiring a new generation of Somali athletes. His message was clear: “Dream big, stay humble, and use your talent to uplift your community.”

The historic moment underscores the powerful influence of sports legends in building bridges between nations. Kanu’s visit was more than ceremonial — it was symbolic of a rising Africa united through culture, legacy, and hope.

As Mogadishu echoed with chants of “Papilo! Papilo!” this Independence Day, it wasn’t just Somalia celebrating freedom — it was the entire continent celebrating one of its finest sons.
