Former Super Falcons assistant coach Rolandson Odey has expressed concern about Nigeria’s level of preparation ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), warning that rival nations appear to be further along in their planning.

Speaking on the team’s recent activities, Odey noted that while Nigeria remains a powerhouse in African women’s football, preparation must be deliberate and phased to maintain that status.
“Other countries have been planning in stages, with structured friendly matches and training camps,” Odey said. “Nigeria must ensure we are not playing catch-up.”
He pointed out that the recent FIFA window friendlies did not provide the kind of competitive edge expected at this stage of preparation.
“The games we played recently did not fully test the team. At this level, you need strong opposition to expose weaknesses early,” he added.
Odey revealed that discussions are ongoing about a potential two-legged friendly trip to Cameroon or participation in an international tournament to strengthen preparations.
“Plans are in place to make up ground, either with Cameroon or another competitive tournament. That’s important,” he explained.
Beyond friendlies, Odey urged authorities to look inward by strengthening the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), emphasizing that there is abundant talent within the domestic league.
“We must value our local league. There is quality in the NWFL, and players should not feel they must leave the country to be noticed,” he stressed.
While acknowledging the contributions of foreign-based players, Odey cautioned against the belief that Europe is the only path to national team recognition.
“That mindset is hurting the local league and pushing players away unnecessarily,” he said.
He concluded by calling for balanced selection and stronger domestic development structures.
“If we combine proper planning with local talent development, Nigeria will remain a dominant force at WAFCON,” Odey stated.
With the tournament fast approaching, attention now turns to whether the Super Falcons can fine-tune their preparations in time to defend their continental crown.
