Rivers United of Port Harcourt’s assistant coach, Yemi Olanrewaju has disclosed that all players, coaches and officials at the Garden City club are looking forward to competing in the group stage of this year’s CAF Champions League.
Sports247 reports that The Pride of Rivers were on Monday drawn into a tough looking Group A – alongside the defending champions, Pyramids FC of Egypt as well as Power Dynamos of Zambia and last season’s CAF Confederations Cup winners, RSC Berkane of Algeria.

Although the group appears to be unassailable, with two in-form and highly dreaded North African teams on the cards against the Nigerian club, Olanrewaju believes his side can pull through into the quarter-finals.
The former head coach at Enyimba of Aba pointed out that Rivers United have already made history in becoming the first Nigerian club to reach the money spinning competition’s group stage since 2019, and believes they can go on to enact more heroics.
He, however, acknowledged that the Port Harcourt-based NPFL runners-up of last season will need luck and prayers to scale the upcoming hurdle, as they are set to compete among the continent’s toughest elite clubs.
Olanrewaju disclosed, “We are excited that we qualified for the group stage; especially as it’s the first for Nigeria after a very long time.
“This is the time for a new statement from an NPFL club, and we are looking forward to this opportunity. This is the highest level of football in Africa, and we’re praying to scale through the group stage.”
