Rivers United Advance After Narrow Win Over Les Aigles

Rivers United are through to the next stage of the CAF Champions League after narrowly defeating Les Aigles of DR Congo with a 1–0 aggregate scoreline. The Port Harcourt-based side secured the slim victory after edging the return leg away from home.

Head coach Finidi George admitted that while the performance was far from perfect, the result was all that mattered at this stage of the competition.

“The most important thing was qualification, and we got the job done,” Finidi said. “The players were a bit nervous, and you could see it in the way we missed some clear chances. But in the end, they showed maturity by managing the game.”

The narrow win highlighted the fine margins of knockout football, with Rivers United relying heavily on a disciplined defensive display to hold their advantage.

Finidi, who only recently took charge of the team, acknowledged that his squad is still a work in progress.

“This is a new group. Many of the players are still learning to play together, so there will be challenges. But I am happy with the spirit they showed because it is not easy playing away in Africa,” he explained.

The former Super Eagles star also called for patience from fans, insisting that the team will continue to improve as the season progresses.

“We know we have to be better going forward. But qualification gives us confidence, and we will work on our mistakes,” Finidi concluded.

The victory means Rivers United maintain Nigeria’s presence on the continental stage, a boost for local football supporters.
