Remo Ladies’ Coach Wemimo Matthew Stays Upbeat, Despite 2-0 Loss To Bayelsa Queens

Remo Queens of Ikenne coach, Wemimo Matthew is staying upbeat about her team’s chances of winning this year’s Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Super-6 title, despite suffering a 2-0 loss to Bayelsa Queens of Yenagoa.

Sports247 reports that Tuesday’s defeat came after two straight victories for Remo Ladies, who were apparently taking full advantage of the contest holding at their home ground in Ikenne, but reality appeared to dawn on them when they came up against the team from Bayelsa State.

However, while Tuesday’s defeat appeared to bring Remo Ladies down to earth, Wemimo insisted that such results should be expected, considering that the competition is for the current best women teams in Nigeria.

Wemimo pointed out, “This is the Super-6, where the best women teams in the country play. You can’t compare the Super-6 with the regular season.”

She then pushed aside insinuations that Remo Ladies have already given up the title chase and declared emphatically that they are not under pressure to emulate the recent title-winning feat of their male team in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL).

“We are still trying our best, and that’s why we won our first two games. Six straight points. So, there’s no pressure on us. No pressure at all.

“We initially had some issues with injuries to two of our players. One recovered, but the other one is still out and has not been able to play. The one who recovered is our right full back, and she’s doing well. Everyone in the team is doing well,” Wemimo disclosed.

She will now aim for a return to winning ways on Thursday, as Remo Ladies go out against title chasing Nasarawa Amazons of Lafia, who are neck-to-neck with Bayelsa Queens at the top of the table.
