Super Falcons captain Rashidat Ajibade has described Nigeria’s slim 1-0 win over Botswana as a mental battle, saying the team had to stay composed under pressure to secure a place in the WAFCON quarter-finals.
The win means Nigeria, with six points from two matches, has booked a quarter-final ticket ahead of their final group fixture against Algeria on Sunday.

“It was a very tough game,” Ajibade said after the match. “Botswana gave everything. We needed to stay mentally strong and patient, and eventually, we got the breakthrough.”
Ajibade, who was named Player of the Match, said the result was critical for confidence but warned that the team must raise its level as the tournament progresses. “There are no easy games. Everyone wants to beat Nigeria. We have to keep our focus sharp for Algeria.”
She also addressed concerns about her fitness. “I’m 100% fit. I know there were rumours about me carrying an injury, but I’m in great shape. I’m happy with how I’m playing, but I know I can do more.”
With nine WAFCON titles already in their cabinet, the Super Falcons are under pressure to reclaim dominance on the continent after South Africa dethroned them in 2022. Ajibade believes this year’s squad has the right blend of experience and hunger.
“We’re not just here to participate—we’re here to win. But we have to take each game seriously. Algeria will be another big test.”
As the team shifts focus to Sunday’s group decider, Ajibade called for calm, unity, and tactical discipline. “We’re in this together. One team, one goal.”
