Rangers GM Ezeaku: Club World Cup Shows Why Nigerian Teams Must Invest Now

As elite teams battle it out at the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, Amobi Ezeaku, General Manager of Rangers International FC, has called on Nigerian clubs to take notes and start building their own legacy.

With the likes of Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns flying Africa’s flag at the global stage, Ezeaku says now is the time for Nigerian clubs to shift from survival mode to strategic development.

“The Club World Cup is not just about superstars—it’s about structure, professionalism, and long-term planning,” Ezeaku stated.

“Teams like Real Madrid didn’t get here overnight. It started with investment in youth academies, infrastructure, data, and wellness systems.”

Ezeaku believes Nigerian clubs must stop relying solely on raw talent and start thinking like global brands. “Every club in this tournament represents a project. Nigerian clubs must become projects—deliberate, targeted, and sustainable.”

Rangers, under Ezeaku’s leadership, has already taken steps by hiring a long-term technical team, investing in grassroots scouting, and initiating partnerships aimed at facility upgrades. But he stresses that more clubs must follow.

“One team can’t do it alone. We need a national culture of football investment.”

He also praised African representatives at the Club World Cup, particularly Al Ahly, for showing that African clubs can compete at the highest level when properly backed. “What Al Ahly is doing isn’t magic. It’s hard work, patience, and a system.”

As the Club World Cup introduces new technologies like semi-automated offside sensors and in-game analytics, Ezeaku said Nigerian clubs must embrace innovation. “This tournament isn’t just a spectacle—it’s a classroom. Nigerian football is watching. Will we learn?”

He concluded: “We can be at the next Club World Cup—but only if we start acting like we deserve to be there.”
