Ramadan: DG NSC Urges Muslims to Embrace Discipline, Reflection and Moral Renewal

As Muslims across Nigeria commence the holy month of Ramadan, the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, has called on the faithful to approach the sacred period as a season of deep reflection, self-discipline and spiritual renewal, stressing that its lessons extend beyond religion into nation-building and personal conduct.

In a goodwill message issued ahead of the commencement of the fast, the DG described Ramadan as a period of “annual training and retraining” — a time designed to reset values, sharpen character and strengthen consciousness of God.

“Ramadan offers us a powerful opportunity to pause from the distractions of everyday life and reconnect with the true essence of our existence,” Olopade said. “It is a period that teaches discipline, sacrifice, humility and accountability — values that are essential not only in faith, but in leadership, sports and national development.”

He echoed the views of Islamic scholars who have cautioned against reducing Ramadan to social activities and elaborate meals, noting that the true spirit of the month lies in introspection, restraint and spiritual growth.

“Ramadan is not about fanfare, excess or routine observance alone. It is about reflection, moral renewal and conscious effort to become better individuals — in our homes, workplaces and communities,” the NSC boss stressed.

Drawing parallels between the values of Ramadan and sports development, Olopade noted that discipline, consistency and self-control — which the fast instills — are the same principles required for excellence in sports and youth development.

“Just as athletes undergo structured training to improve performance, Ramadan is a spiritual training ground. The lessons of patience, focus and perseverance are timeless and relevant to every sphere of life,” he added.

The DG also urged Muslim faithful to use the period to pray for peace, unity and progress in Nigeria, while committing themselves to personal reform and service to humanity.

As Ramadan begins, Olopade wished Muslims a spiritually rewarding fast, praying that the month brings renewed purpose, answered prayers and lasting positive change to individuals and the nation at large
