Race to 2026 FIFA Referees List Heats Up As Nigerian Officials Clear Crucial Fitness Test

The battle for a place on the prestigious 2026 FIFA International Referees List has officially kicked off in Nigeria, as top officials successfully completed the world body’s mandatory fitness test this morning.

The rigorous exercise, supervised by the Nigeria Football Referees Committee, featured candidates from three disciplines — association football, futsal, and beach soccer — all of whom had undergone full medical screenings the day before.

Passing the drills is only one piece of the puzzle. FIFA has outlined tough global standards for nomination, with associations required to submit their final names no later than Sunday, October 5, 2025.

Among the key requirements: referees must be at least 25 years old, have officiated consistently at the top domestic level for two years, and clear a FIFA-approved medical and fitness assessment. Those older than 45 will face even stricter technical checks.

Importantly, FIFA has reinforced its gender-neutral approach, making clear that both male and female officials can be nominated across all categories. New, tailored fitness benchmarks have also been introduced for women refereeing futsal and beach soccer matches.

With the deadline fast approaching, the Nigerian refereeing fraternity is now abuzz with anticipation. For many, this test was more than a hurdle — it was the first decisive step in securing a coveted international badge.
