“Promotion Should Be Earned on Merit” – Agbagu Victor Damilola Applauds Super 4 Move

Coach Agbagu Victor Damilola, the 2nd Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Football Coaches Association (Ogun State chapter), has expressed his support for the newly introduced Super 4 format replacing the traditional Super 8 in the Nigeria National League (NNL).

Reacting to the adjustment in the league’s end-of-season format, Coach Agbagu described the change as a positive and fair step that rewards teams who demonstrate consistency throughout the league campaign.

According to him, clubs that perform strongly during the long and demanding regular season deserve to gain automatic promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) without the pressure of additional qualifying rounds.

“My opinion is that this new format is okay,” Agbagu said. “Consistency of teams and performance need to be rewarded, hence those who proved themselves during the league should earn automatic promotion.”

He further explained that the Super 4 play-off remains important, but mainly as a platform to determine the overall champion of the Nigeria National League rather than deciding promotion places.

“The Super 4 is okay to determine the true winner of the league,” he added.

The NNL recently reviewed its competition structure, reducing the traditional Super 8 play-off tournament to a Super 4 format, where the top teams from the conference groups will compete to crown the overall champion after promotion slots have already been secured.

Supporters of the new system believe the change will reduce financial pressure on clubs, shorten the competition calendar, and place greater emphasis on season-long performance.

Coach Agbagu’s remarks reflect growing support among football stakeholders who believe rewarding consistency during the regular season will encourage stronger competition and better planning among clubs across the NNL.
