Kwara United head coach Tunde Sanni has admitted his surprise at the quality of opponents Abakaliki FC after guiding his team to a historic victory in the final of the 2025 President Federation Cup.
The Ilorin-based club clinched the title for the first time in their history with a 4-3 penalty shootout win following a goalless draw in regulation time at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos on Saturday.

The victory also seals Kwara United’s qualification to represent Nigeria in the 2025/2026 CAF Confederation Cup.
In his post-match remarks, an emotional Coach Sanni praised his players and acknowledged Abakaliki FC’s tough resistance.
“We never knew they were this good,” Sanni said. “Honestly, we were surprised by the kind of football they played. They gave us a very tough game.”
Despite dominating possession, Kwara United failed to find the back of the net during regular time, forcing the final into penalties.
“We had chances in the first half to score, but we couldn’t convert,” Sanni noted. “Their defensive strategy was solid. They sat back with numbers and made it hard to break through. But I believed in my players and goalkeeper. We kept motivating each other.”
Sanni credited Abakaliki FC’s tactical discipline, especially their defensive organization and man-marking approach, which stifled Kwara’s attacking midfielders.
“They didn’t allow two of our key midfielders to operate freely. They were pressing and man-marking all game. It forced us to build from the back and try to penetrate through the flanks.”
He added that despite Abakaliki FC’s relatively unknown status, they displayed great potential and tactical awareness.
“They really impressed. They marked well and gave us no space. We have fast, young players, but couldn’t break them down easily. I have to give them credit.”
Kwara United now turn their focus to continental football as they prepare for their CAF Confederation Cup campaign, while Abakaliki FC bow out with their heads held high after a brave performance in their debut national final
