Peterside Idah: “Nigeria Can Beat Any Team in the Playoffs — We’re Still the Giants of Africa”

Former Nigeria international and football analyst, Peterside Idah, has voiced his strong belief that the Super Eagles remain the team to beat ahead of the crucial African World Cup playoff stage.

Speaking confidently after Nigeria’s emphatic 4–0 victory over Benin Republic, Idah said that despite the challenges faced during the qualifiers, the quality within the squad makes the team capable of defeating any opponent on the continent.

Idah, who represented Nigeria as a goalkeeper before turning pundit, stated that the upcoming playoffs will not be easy, with several strong teams still in the race, but insisted that Nigeria’s experience, individual brilliance, and hunger for redemption will make the difference.

“We might have struggled in the group stages, but now it’s a different ball game,” he said. “On our day, Nigeria is better than any of the teams left in the playoffs. What we need now is focus, tactical discipline, and determination.”

Looking ahead to the semifinals of the playoff phase — which will see Nigeria face Gabon — Idah urged the players to maintain the same intensity that saw them overpower Benin Republic, stressing that the road to the World Cup is not for the faint-hearted.

He reminded the team that Nigerians are counting on them to restore the nation’s football pride after recent disappointments.

The former player also lauded coach Eric Chelle for stabilizing the team and bringing back belief among the players and fans. “You can see the chemistry returning — the body language is right, the hunger is back, and the boys now play like they want it,” Idah noted.

He concluded by urging Nigerians to stay united behind the team, adding that while the journey to the 2026 World Cup will be tough, faith and teamwork could once again make the Super Eagles soar to new heights.
