Peterside Hails Eagles’ Spirit After Gabon Thrashing, Urges Total Focus For DR Congo Final

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Idah Peterside has praised Nigeria’s courage and discipline after their thrilling 4–1 extra-time victory over Gabon, insisting the performance shows the team has rediscovered its fighting spirit ahead of Sunday’s decisive World Cup playoff final against DR Congo.

Peterside, speaking after the match in Rabat, said he was “proud and relieved” to see the Super Eagles rise above the off-field tension that overshadowed their preparation. He noted that despite the training boycott and bonus dispute, the players still stepped onto the pitch with commitment and determination, showing Nigeria’s trademark resilience when it mattered the most.

According to him, the team’s ability to stay calm after Gabon’s late equaliser and then dominate extra time proved that the squad has matured significantly under Eric Chelle, both mentally and tactically.

“I am very happy with what the boys did today,” Peterside said. “They showed character, they showed hunger, and they made Nigeria proud. It takes real focus to go through everything they went through off the pitch and still deliver a performance like that.”

Peterside however urged the players not to relax, warning that Sunday’s final against DR Congo will be a tougher test. He cautioned that the Congolese team is technically strong, physically imposing and highly motivated after their own impressive run through qualification.

He emphasised that Nigeria must maintain the same level of intensity, teamwork and concentration — especially in defence, where DR Congo’s quick transitions and aerial threat could pose problems.

“For now, the Gabon victory is behind us. The big job is on Sunday,” Peterside stressed. “The players must stay focused, stay united and give everything for the country. We have a real chance to reach the World Cup again, and we cannot afford any distractions.”

He concluded by urging fans to rally behind the team, insisting that collective support will lift the Super Eagles through the final hurdle.
