Peseiro Unveils 25-Man Squad as Super Eagles Set Sights on Fourth AFCON Title in Cote d’Ivoire

In preparation for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Head Coach Jose Peseiro has finalized a formidable 25-man squad for Nigeria’s quest for a fourth continental title.

The squad boasts familiar faces, with a balanced composition of three goalkeepers, nine defenders, five midfielders, and eight forwards.

Captain Ahmed Musa makes a significant return to the squad after being excluded from the starting lineup in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series.

The goalkeeping lineup features South Africa-based Stanley Nwabili, alongside Francis Uzoho and Olorunleke Ojo.

Leading the defensive line is 2009 U17 World Cup star Kenneth Omeruo, accompanied by stalwarts such as William Ekong, Olaoluwa Aina, and others.

Wilfred Ndidi, who missed the World Cup qualifying matches, is set to fortify the midfield alongside Alex Iwobi, Raphael Onyedika, Joe Ayodele-Aribo, and Frank Onyeka.

In the forward line, the squad boasts a potent combination of experience and emerging talent. Musa, Nigeria’s record goalscorer at the FIFA World Cup finals, partners with Africa Player of the Year Victor Osimhen, Kelechi Iheanacho, and others.

The team is scheduled to embark on a one-week training camp in Abu Dhabi, UAE, from January 2nd to January 9th before departing for Abidjan on January 10th.

The Super Eagles will kick off their AFCON campaign against Equatorial Guinea on January 14th, followed by clashes with host nation Cote d’Ivoire on January 18th and Guinea Bissau on January 22nd.

Nigeria, participating in the Africa Cup of Nations for the 20th time, seeks to replicate past successes as champions in 1980, Tunisia in 1994, and South Africa in 2013.

Memories of the 1984 finals in Cote d’Ivoire, where a young Nigerian squad reached the Final, add to the anticipation as the Super Eagles aim for glory once again.
