Paul Onuachu Creates History, Becomes First Ever Nigerian To Win Belgium Golden Shoe

Nigerian star Paul Onuachu has received the Golden Shoe in Belgium. He was chosen as the best player of the past year in the Belgian league.

Onuachu scored 33 league goals over the entire 2020-21 season and already has 12 in the current campaign.

The KRC Genk striker becomes the first-ever Nigerian to claim the prestigious honor. He is just the fourth African to walk home with the award after Aruna Dindane of Cote d’Ivoire (2003), Morocco’s Mbark Boussoufa twice (2006 and 2010), and DR Congo’s Dieumerci Mbokani (2012).

He received more votes (333) than Club Brugge pair Noa Lang (272) and Charles De Ketelaere (271).

With the win, Paul Onuachu becomes only the third player in Genk’s history to be named Belgium’s best and the first in 20 years.

The 27-years old is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury which saw him miss out on a place in Nigeria’s 2021 AFCON Squad.

Onuachu moved to Danish club FC Midtjylland in 2012, on a scholarship, from their affiliate team in Nigeria, Ebedei. He was a prolific scorer for their youth team, and made his first-team debut in the Cup later that year, before making his league debut in December 2012. In June 2013 he signed a new three-year contract with the club, before extending it for a further three years in August 2015. In early 2015 he was loaned to Vejle BK, before returning to FC Midtjylland ahead of the 2015–16 season.

In August 2019 he signed for Belgian club Genk.
