Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, paid a solidarity visit to Comfort 95.1 FM in Uyo on Wednesday, April 30, in support of Mighty George, the broadcaster attempting to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest radio talk show.
Bassey, a veteran journalist and seasoned sports administrator, joined the live show to commend George’s resilience and commitment.

“Congratulations George. I know that you will pull through this. I’ll be waiting for you to come out so we can celebrate,” Bassey said during the broadcast.
Reflecting on his first month in office, Bassey described his new role as challenging but rewarding, and used the platform to outline bold plans for multi-sport development in Akwa Ibom.
“We want to have a State Basketball team, a Volleyball team, and give attention to all sports,” he noted, affirming his broader vision for inclusivity beyond football.
Backing words with action, Bassey announced that:
“Between now and November, every Sports Association must have a competition.”
He also revealed that the state is working on launching its own Sports Festival, with grassroots development as the cornerstone—supported by Governor Umo Eno.
On the upcoming National Sports Festival, Bassey stated:
“I’m not in a hurry to win medals. I’m in a hurry to develop stars.”
The Commissioner added that Akwa Ibom is actively studying models from other states to establish a functional Sports Academy, which would focus on nurturing young talent.
Touching on Akwa United FC’s current relegation battle in the Nigeria Premier Football League, Bassey expressed cautious optimism, saying he believes the club still has a fighting chance with three games remaining.
Meanwhile, Mighty George continues his 100-hour marathon radio talk show as part of his official Guinness World Record attempt—an effort that has drawn local and national attention.
As the broadcast continues, support from prominent figures like Paul Bassey adds momentum to George’s historic journey on the airwaves.
