The trip marked his first-ever visit to the African continent, and he expressed his profound satisfaction with the experience.

Fondly known as ‘the Bomb’ during his playing days, Berger’s journey to Nigeria was nothing short of rewarding.

At a special dinner organized by Standard Chartered Bank, the official sponsor of Liverpool, the ex-footballer shared his excitement about meeting the talented kids, ranging from ages seven to seventeen, at the event held in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Interacting with journalists, Berger couldn’t contain his enthusiasm, stating, “They are wonderful children.

I saw great talent in some of them, and I would love to see one or two of them play for the Super Eagles and Liverpool very soon.” The Czech football icon expressed his belief in the potential of these young players, harboring hopes that they may one day grace the national team and even wear the renowned Liverpool jersey.

Berger’s primary purpose for visiting Nigeria was to conduct a training session with the aspiring football stars.

He emphasized the significance of nurturing young talents, drawing parallels to the legendary Michael Owen, and expressed his gratitude to Standard Chartered for facilitating this memorable expedition.

During the event, the former Liverpool star showered praise on Yakubu Aiyegbeni, a former Nigerian football sensation. Having shared the pitch with Aiyegbeni during their time at Portsmouth, Berger lauded him as one of the greatest African players he ever encountered.

He admired Aiyegbeni’s strength, passion, and camaraderie, recalling moments when the Nigerian striker lightened the mood with his humor during their journeys to training.

Patrik Berger’s illustrious football career began in his homeland with Slavia Prague, after which he spent a season with Borussia Dortmund in Germany.

In 1996, he made his move to England, where he enjoyed seven fruitful years with Liverpool, securing four coveted trophies.

Despite his profound love for the sport, Berger clarified that coaching is not in his future plans due to its demanding nature.

Instead, he intends to focus on his fishing business while continuing to inspire and support young children with aspirations in football.

Aderugbo Dayo, Head of Corporate Affairs and Brand Marketing at Standard Chartered Bank, expressed gratitude to Berger for his tour and extended appreciation to the kids and everyone involved in making the event a resounding success.

The visit of Patrik Berger to Lagos undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the young footballers who had the privilege of meeting the football icon.

His words of encouragement and belief in their potential have undoubtedly inspired the budding talents to dream big and work hard to achieve their football ambitions.
