Head coach of the MFM Women’s Basketball team Ochuko Owolabi believes the upcoming FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifiers will serve primarily as a testing ground for Nigeria’s women’s national team, D’Tigress.
Owolabi noted that Nigeria has already secured qualification for the Women’s World Cup after winning the AfroBasket title, which reduces the pressure typically associated with the qualifiers.

“Since qualification is already secured, there is less pressure on the team,” Owolabi said.
According to her, the tournament presents an ideal opportunity for the coaching crew to experiment with tactics and player combinations.
“It will be a chance to test different strategies and see how players work together,” she explained.
The coach also highlighted the importance of evaluating fringe players who are hoping to secure a permanent place in the national team.
“This is the time to give opportunities to players who may not always get regular minutes,” she added.
Owolabi believes such opportunities are essential for building squad depth and ensuring long-term competitiveness. “Strong teams are built when you have reliable options across the roster,” she noted.
The qualifiers could therefore allow the technical staff to assess which players best fit the team’s style and future plans.
“The coaches will be able to see who adapts well to the system and who needs more development,” she said.
Despite describing the tournament as an experimental platform, Owolabi stressed that professionalism must remain a priority.
“Even if the pressure is lower, the team must still compete with pride,” she concluded.
With D’Tigress already assured of their place at the global showpiece, the qualifiers may provide a valuable opportunity to strengthen the squad ahead of future international challenges.
