“Our History Gives Us Confidence” — Ezeaku Backs Rangers to Finish Job Against MC Alger in Algeria

Enugu Rangers chairman Amobi Ezeaku has expressed confidence that the Flying Antelopes can draw inspiration from their rich continental history when they face MC Alger in Friday’s decisive CAF Champions League return leg in Algeria.

Rangers travel to Algiers with a 2-0 advantage from Sunday’s second preliminary-round first leg in Abeokuta, where Kenneth Igboke and James Emo scored late goals to secure victory despite the Nigerian side losing goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh to an early red card.

Ezeaku believes the club’s tradition of resilience and success encourages ahead of another difficult assignment on the continental stage.

The Rangers chief highlighted October as a significant month in the club’s history, recalling past achievements and the fighting spirit that have helped establish the Flying Antelopes among Nigeria’s most respected football institutions.

He acknowledged the challenge of facing the Algerian champions on their home ground but maintained that Rangers have reasons to approach the encounter with confidence.

The historical significance of the fixture is particularly striking.

In the 1976 African Cup of Champions Clubs semi-finals, Rangers defeated MC Alger 2-0 in the first leg before suffering a 3-0 defeat in Algeria, allowing the North African side to advance 3-2 on aggregate.

Fifty years later, Rangers face the same opponents with an identical first-leg advantage, hoping to avoid a repeat of that painful elimination.

The return fixture is scheduled for Friday, October 23, at 8pm Algerian time, equivalent to 8pm in Nigeria, with a place in the 2026/27 CAF Champions League group stage at stake.

Ezeaku’s optimism follows a determined first-leg performance in which Rangers overcame considerable pressure to secure a valuable advantage.

However, the club’s leadership remains conscious that the qualification battle is far from over.

Rangers need to avoid a defeat by more than one goal to guarantee progression.

For Ezeaku, the task is to ensure that the club’s proud history inspires another memorable continental performance rather than allowing the events of 1976 to repeat themselves.
